Are Humans Good or Bad?

By Amia Reamy

Today I went to an iGlobe meeting about debate. Debate is a formal discussion on a particular topic in a public meeting. Most of the time, debates create arguments. Today Kendall Haney and Brent Haney debated about whether humans are good or bad. Brent was debating about the positive and Kendall was debating about the negative. Brent made a good point about how humans are not perfect but do create, love, and inspire for others and Kendall also made a good point about how there are horrible crimes happening everyday and if there were more good humans than bad, don’t you think the crimes would have stopped by now? But, believe it or not, this question has been asked by more humans than you think, and yet nobody has come to grips with the true meaning behind it. Think to yourself, “Are humans good or bad?”. If you think of this question as an emotional and heart to heart question, will it be the same? It might be the same to you but to me, it comes from a completely different perspective.

Almost every human has something they don’t come to grips with. Whether its good or bad. I’ve learned that humans do the opposite of what they’re feeling. Take a bully for example. They bully and bully and bully. Don’t you ever wonder why they bully? They’re doing the opposite of what they feel. Most of them are hurt mentally. They’re not coming to grips with the problem and they’re taking it out on other humans. When sometimes, all they want is a human; a human to lean on. Does this make bullying ok? Not at all but it does give you a different point of view.

In my opinion, the question “Are humans good or bad?” really means “Are you good or bad?” God didn’t give us this beautiful environment to just throw it away. God gave it to us to make mistakes and learn from them. God also didn’t give us our morals to throw away. That’s all life is; a bunch of questions with new answers daily. Life is a test. Will you pass or will you fail? Anyone can change or make a difference for the better and anyone can also change and make a difference for the worse. Which one are you? Are you good or bad? “Are humans good or bad?” It’s your choice.

“We are not given a good or bad life. We are given a life. Its up to us to make it good or bad.” – Devika Fernando
